Una Konta di Nha Donu

A story about my grandfather.

A brief Synopsis of Oh, Nantucket, the novel.

A Few Minutes With Augie Ramos...

Quoting the Inquirer and Mirror, "Ramos was a very big part of the island community, in ways that were obvious and not so obvious."

Augie, as I knew him, was brash and outspoken — his weapon and his shield! He was an exceptional individual, a free thinker and a shrewed businessman.

First a thorn in the town's side, he later became recognized as a leader in the Cape Verdean Community as well as the town of Nantucket.

His story tells how the exception makes the rule. Why was it necessary to be exceptional to succeed when all that was required was equal opportunity?

Listen to this excerpt from his interview as he describes the Cape Verdean Community, its demise and the discrimination on Nantucket.

An Ode to They

Broken hearts and broken dreams, forsaken goals for now it seems...

They struggle through this life alone, childhood fancies pushed aside.

They press on against the raging tide, that drags them out to sea.

But what They seek cannot be found for They are removed — apart from our ways, our world, our wants.

And all because They aren’t like we, a very different world They see.

They are the sensitive souls, whose tender spirits rail against the everyday. They cannot abide by our demands to conform, to respond to play along.

Overwhelmed by sights and sounds, confounded by ALL that abounds.

They are marching to a different drum whose sound’s muted by the daily hum.

They seek to find a way to cope to compromise to stay afloat.

Weak are They, less than we, a character flaw, a personality?

They are anachronistic spirits, adrift in time. They cannot comport to our ideal nor can they relate to how we feel.

So, what is to become of They who do not fit?

They are lives cut short from choices made by will or circumstance.

They have suffered in their time but peace awaits beyond the blind.

...For They are not of this world! Let us pray there is another.

[ In loving memory of They who have lost their way.]
